David Kong. Can you make it work? Yes, sort of, sometimes. It is possible to mix and match your codecs throughout your project, but there is a great advantage in the simplicity of using one codec all the way through your workflow.

Some higher-end cameras or external recorders are able to capture ProRes files, and a Windows user can then edit them directly depending on what type of ProRes it is. Decode is not enough.

It means that they took a clip, encoded it with a real Apple ProRes encoder, and then picked apart the resulting file to see what was inside it. The problem is that codecs are really complicated.

This will vary by software, but there have been many reports of low image quality, gamma shifts, and bit-depth errors from reverse-engineered ProRes encoders. You lose one of the main benefits of ProRes. This is the primary reason why professional editors steer clear of reverse-engineered codecs. They can give errors, or they could literally not function at all.

If you stay within the official, licensed ProRes ecosystem, Apple software is encoding the file and then Apple software is decoding the file. That gives a nice guarantee of good performance. Apple offers very solid support and they have a huge user base of helpful people who can get your issues sorted out. The 3rd-party prores encoders are published by tiny companies sometimes with no contact info at allwhich may not be around very long. As of the time of writing this article, no one knows whether they are shutting down or not.

And just to round out the list of cons, some of these 3rd-party encoders are very slow—much slower than the official ProRes, and also much slower than other intermediate codec options.

These reverse-engineered codecs are not that. Users of unlicensed encoders have reported many issues. In many cases, the exports from unlicensed ProRes encoders seemed fine, but later on they failed to pass quality control for broadcast.

It is the ultimate transcoding swiss army knife and does a lot of amazing things. There have been many issues with ProRes exports from FFmpeg. But for most editors, sending your files through these programs is not a practical solution.

Telestream uses official Apple encoders, so you have the quality guarantee. You could theoretically repeat that same workflow I just mentioned. You have to pay for Telestream Cloud, though not nearly as much as the other two options. Unlike Scratch, which is a fully-featured finishing tool, this is primarily for playback, viewing, monitoring, and converting.

It works on Macs, PCs, and even Linux. Click below:. This article is not about Apple vs Avid or Mac vs Windows. Cineform now part of GoPro has some great intermediate codec options. Cineform is not any harder to work with than ProRes and DNxHR, and it actually uses some newer technology that can give slightly better image quality.

Option 1: Get all of your assets on a hard drive, connect it to a Mac with your NLE installed, and render it out. Option 3: If none of your friends have Macs are you living under a rock? DNxHD is a video codec intended to be usable as both an intermediate format suitable for use while editing and as a presentation format. DNxHD is intended to be an open standard, but as of Marchhas remained effectively a proprietary Avid format. The source code for the Avid DNxHD codec is freely available from Avid for internal evaluation and review, although commercial use requires Avid licensing approval.

Such material is immediately accessible by editing platforms that directly support the DNxHD codec. In JulyFFmpeg added bit encoding support. The header consists of many parts and may include quantization tables and bits of user data. Each frame also has two GUIDs and timestamp. The frame header is packed into big-endian dwords. Actual frame data consists of packed macroblocks using a technique almost identical to JPEG : DC prediction and variable-length codes with run length encoding for other 63 coefficients.

DNxHD became a very popular finishing and editing codec as it was a Media Composer friendly format and the compression also allowed users to store HD content on drives which, at the time, had limited performance and capacity.

As a result, Avid revised its codecs in line with this demand and released an updated DNxHR codec set. While this new codec has been released this does not mean the end of DNxHD.

Let's look at them both and what they are suitable for. Post a Comment. Popular posts from this blog Avid Media Composer September 13, Media Composer Similar to a client monitor, anytime you play or scrub footage others on your network will be able to see the stream using an NDI player.

Hey Hitfilm community, I have recently been looking for a good free converter that can convert my video files into DNxHD which many people say is fantastic for editing. The problem is that I can't a free converter that does this, and if it is free it's usually a trial that has a watermark on it. So I am just wondering if anyone knows a free converter that does this. KevinTheFilmmaker Thanks mate, these helped alot and got the job done! Beware of Super it usually comes with a lot of unwanted extra spyware.

If you can get past that it's not a bad utility. It will also convert to ProRes and other common formats. While it is not a free app the trail mode is functional and does not watermark.

It only converts two files at a time. You have to close and restart the app. The trial mode will not handle image sequences. Hitfilm does need Quicktime and the Avid codecs installed. So how does this work exactly? I haven't found anything that resembles the screenshot on the page you linked.

What did I miss? StormyKnight The Avid codecs install into Quicktime. They are not a program, there is nothing to run and they do nothing without some other software that uses the Quicktime subsystem for file encoding.

After installing they will simply show up as an available codec in the list of codecs most file encoders that are able to use Quicktime. Hitfilm falls into this category.

Since you have it I would just use Vegas. I don't know if you have Vegasaur or Ultimate S but even without those it's still pretty easy to batch process in Vegas. Using scripts you can just drop all the clips you want to transcode on a track, add region markers to the events then batch render the regions. Vegas comes with a script to batch render regions but you'll need to add one to add regions to events and you need to have a render profile set up.

Here's the AddRegionsToEvents. If you don't want to fool with copying and pasting that's ok because there's an archive of all kinds of Vegas scripts here and it includes that one:.
